Never heard of the term “hygiene theater” until now, but it makes sense. You should still wash your hands frequently and disinfect surfaces here and there, but remember that the Coronavirus doesn’t last too long on surfaces, so focus on ventilation and wear a mask!

It is astonishing how long it has taken to disabuse people of the notion that surfaces are a meaningful vector of COVID transmission. But as long as business think their patrons still want to see the deep-clean dance, they’ll feel they have a compelling reason to put on a show.
