The UKs police, crime, sentencing and courts bill already had Draconian legislation in it, but Home Secretary Priti Patel has been adding even more authoritarian laws before it is finally passed. One law even revokes a person's right to free speech and assembly without them being convicted of a crime! Is it all in anticipation of more climate protests, or are they feeling that they might need these powers for other reasons in the future? It is incredible to see a UK government, a supposed beacon of democracy, passing legislation like this. Highly unusual. "It is, without hyperbole or caveat, a piece of law which would sit more easily in a dictatorship than a democracy. You’d expect to see it in Belarus. But instead we’re seeing it here, under a home secretary who is now so authoritarian she poses an existential threat to British liberty."

It's one thing to tie this to protests, but I would like to hear more noise being made about how this will spread to all kinds of other areas, the biggest one I can think of being football fans. We should draw up a list of MPs who were against lockdown and covid measures and ask them why they support a bill which would make those protests illegal.

When it comes down to it, this is what a lot of people want. We were warned of populist authoritarianism in the UK, and the last couple of years have shown how consistently a majority support massive government control of their lives. The ideals aren't about morals or intellect, it's purely emotional. If being more punitive helps people feel more safe, and the people want it, well, that's democracy. A majority of people couldn't be wrong.
