Truly unsettling. Right now, Uyghurs are being used as lab subjects for emotion AI, under coercion, strapped into restraint chairs, and then tagged as "nervous" or "anxious" which is taken as a marker of guilt

Uyghurs are used by China as test subjects for emotion AI. This is a shocking new attempt at invading into their mind where any emotional responses, along with political views, are intrusively checked. No privacy is allowed—Uyghurs are objectified. Leaving aside the AI emotion recognition/detection hype, which has been debunked, the ‘testing’ of surveillance technologies on subjugated communities and people should be called out for what it is: a human rights violation

China is estimated to be home to half of the world's almost 800 million surveillance cameras. It also has a large number of smart cities, such as Chongqing, where AI is built into the foundations of the urban environment. Chongqing-based investigative journalist Hu Liu told Panorama of his own experience: "Once you leave home and step into the lift, you are captured by a camera. There are cameras everywhere." "When I leave home to go somewhere, I call a taxi, the taxi company uploads the data to the government. I may then go to a cafe to meet a few friends and the authorities know my location through the camera in the cafe. "There have been occasions when I have met some friends and soon after someone from the government contacts me. They warned me, 'Don't see that person, don't do this and that.' "With artificial intelligence we have nowhere to hide," he said.

I really want to know why China is one of the biggest threats to a free human existence? It's not because they pose a military threat, or that they are a growing economic power, it's that the CCP is committed to developing the next generation of tools for oppressing people at a fundamental psychological level. It will then inevitably export those tools to other powerful groups and governments. People think there's always going to be this cycle of oppression, revolution and renewal. But the disturbing reality is that permanent enslavement is increasingly likely. The CCP represents a future in which a person can be psychologically dismantled and reassembled to be the perfect obedient serf.
