This is one of THE most important stories of the pandemic in the US.

It's not that CDC or public health departments don't understand the problems in the data they collect and report, it's that we've been absolutely terrible at communicating. We need to trust that public can understand uncertainty and complexity when explained well.

We need a commission on the complete failure to react and respond to the pandemic. We had ample warning and failed over and over again. I hope the CDC and other agencies have made changes, but we can’t be sure until we investigate what went wrong and why.

the planet. You could have done no contact tracing and no testing, but had the government simply made mask wearing and social distancing the patriotic/moral duty it is, you'd have a small fraction of the dead we have now. A homicidal government. will trump good data everyday.

This is a good article (the Atlantic's coverage of Covid has been outstanding). But it seems that early and even continuing data collection problems pale in comparsion to the intentional spread of disinformation about the virus from the man with the biggest mouthpiece on.

I actually do not think it suffices. If you have some specific commentary or counter argument, I would invite you to make it. As someone who was following this since early January last year and well-versed in both public health and data science, I think that this article captures much of the failure in the US.
