Atrocious. Wealthy and mostly white people exploiting their privledge to full advantage, then getting upset when steps are taken to level the playing field.

Although low-income communities of color have been hit hardest by Covid-19, people from wealthier, largely white neighborhoods have been flooding vaccination appointment systems and taking an outsized share of the limited supply.

Residents of wealthier, largely white neighborhoods have snagged vaccine appointments at rates far above their population share in NY, Washington and other major cities. Perhaps the solution to this problem is to make this vaccination program MOBILE. That is, if people in poorer neighborhoods don’t come, the vaccination team goes to them..one building at a time. ⁦

This is a well done piece, offering examples of inequities, local attempts to make the vaccine rollout more equitable, political challenges (from constituents & states’ limits on local control), legal concerns of targeting, community vs individual risk.

It doesn’t matter who is getting the vaccine. The goal is shots in arms as fast as possible to achieve herd immunity ASAP. The vaccine isn’t a tool to achieve social justice. It’s a ticket back to normalcy. Toward that e d, this agitation is unproductive.

White, affluent people going to poorer neighborhoods to get vaccinated. The hood knows how to fix this. “Fixing the problem is tricky, however. Officials fear that singling out neighborhoods for priority access could invite lawsuits alleging race preference.”

this is the other side of white politicians harping on the idea that black people are more hesitant to get vaccinated. It was just an excuse to to give white people the vaccine first, despite them not being hit as hard by COVID in the first place

This real Adora Lee, a resident of Washington’s Ward 8, receiving the vaccine. “People who live in Ward 3 and people who live in Ward 8, they’ve got different social realities,” she said. “This is no joke for us.”Credit...Kenny Holston for The New York Times
