I have mixed feelings about this piece. It is a bit of a sell piece by the site, but the broad strokes are generally correct. I have done quite a bit of telehealth this year as well as in-person w/N-95 and transparent barrier. The call dropping or lag that can happen on any platform can be really frustrating during delicate moments in therapy. On the other hand, doing therapy through a mask and transparent curtain is a bit weird to say the least. My best read of the relationship between telehealth and traditional in-office therapy is that they are two distinct tools in the clinical armamentarium. Teletherapy will probably result in quicker disclosures and better access, but less emotional oomf than in-person. In-person allows for more relational tension/meaning, but may pull for longer periods of avoidance of material that is perceived to be shameful. I have done adult and adolescent therapy for over 17 years and this year has definitely been the weirdest. It has also been the most variable in terms of outcomes.
