“In the aftermath, it is not unlikely that capital will demand states use every tool in their arsenal to compel us to “return to work,” to get back to “business as usual.” In such a situation, and in a moment where unemployment threatens to make us compete for a dwindling supply of bad jobs at depressed wages, the bullshit about “doing what you love” and “embracing the inner artist” is likely to be thrown out the window. Work or die, bitches.” & “Fuck you, Artists”

As a musician and college music instructor, I think about this a lot, more for my students than myself. I thought about it a lot before the virus too. Doing what you love, pursuing your dream, etc. might be luxuries that many cannot afford right now. The arts are attacked as "pie in the sky" and impractical even in good times. Sadly, the arts and other creative endeavors will continue to suffer until we get past this mess.

Such a brutal topic to think about, yet one to really consider. As a theatre educator and a professional actor during the summer months, I’ve encountered so many colleagues that are simply dying because of all that’s happening with COVID. Yet, when you look at the world it’s clear that we need artists more than ever, and not just for entertainment purposes, but as creators. I choose to be optimistic and think that this will lead to a Renaissance of new creation and artists will be at the forefront. Yet, the world in its current state won’t allow it...even though it needs it badly.
