Degrowth is a nice concept when you are sitting on a mountain of gold. For everyone else it will sound like a person sitting on a mountain of gold telling you to not bother climbing up.

That's true, living in the third world all my life (Istanbul, TR) I know the general opinion in relation to each and every situation is quite different than the 1st world. Still, every society has mechanisms for survival, as we are seeing in TR in the ongoing pandemic. These topics like degrowth will be hard to implement politically, but there's a growing need to speak about them publicly, as the next decade will be quite decisive.

The "degrowth" movement has advocated for reducing production of goods, working hours, and, inevitably, GDP—all with the end goal of reducing carbon emissions. With the economy at a standstill, we're being challenged by some experts to envision a different kind of economy—one that could help solve the climate crisis, rather than make it worse.// Rather than aiming to have the economy—and emissions—jump back up after the pandemic is over, it could be a moment to think about how to keep emissions down as we reopen and rebuild. That might involve leaving growth behind.
