In 2010, after analyzing historical cycles of instability, Turchin made a prediction that was published at the time in the journal Nature: America will suffer a period of major social upheaval beginning around 2020. Some were skeptical, Turchin says, because “people did not understand that I was making scientific predictions, not prophecies.”

I predicted in 2016 that if Sanders was not elected president that it would only be a matter of a couple or few years before we saw significant civil unrest in the streets. Not because I think Sanders has all the answers and is some ultimate panacea for our ills, but because he's one of the only people in Washington even seriously looking at those ills and pushing people to address them
