A friend and I were talking about this aspect of art - that it really has no obvious monetary value. If someone can get a record of a bid in an auction house, that can be the only reference of its value. This feature can be useful if you need clean money or tax breaks for instance. Suddenly I thought of all the hands and incentives that make up a market, when traders largely just look at price... like reading shadow puppets.
