“Stop Painting” at Ca’ Corner Della Regina, Fondazione Prada, Venice
by Pablo Larios
“Everyone knows that, for all practical purposes, almost anything goes in art today. As well as a great deal of bad art, a taxonomical fuzziness has ensued with regard to the genre of painting. We often don’t really know what we’re talking about when we talk about a painting because it’s unclear if it’s a painting to begin with. Was it actually a painting that Banksy shredded at Sotheby’s in 2018? Or was it rather a performance of a painting tearing itself apart? Or was it not a work of art at all, but a stunt, or a protest, or a gag, of a hyper-valued commodity committing seppuku? And is it a painting again when it’s back at auction in 2021? Then again, maybe for you, Banksy will never count as art at all.”
