I'm no professional, but isn't it unusual to see a secular picture lit from above like this? Caravaggio's influence is being acknowledged here technically but I wonder if it goes further. Caravaggio was a great painter of religious subjects using ordinary people from the street as models and also painted card players in a close group. I may be reading too much into this, but given that some of Christ's disciples were fishermen, the ethereal li…
