I personally do not think we are “missing” a sports category, because I am hard pressed to think of anything LESS relevant than sports. In a time of crumbling global orders, pandemic, climate change, massive power concentrations, radical monetary changes, democracy under threat, and historical injustices still largely unaddressed, I am hard pressed to see the relevance of competitive hotdog eating, laser tag, curling, golf, cricket, or whatever you call your sportsball.
In my mind, this is nothing more than bread and circuses, except now the plebeians are the ones providing the bread. This is astroturf tribalism complete with paying for the privilege of being branded. So, no, I personally do not think we are missing anything relevant.
BUT here is the thing about decentralized systems: my personal opinion doesn’t necessarily matter. As community generation becomes opened up, you can create your own community full of people who disagree with me, complete with your own admins, etc. While that is not online right now, my understanding is that it has been the intention from day 1 to allow for an ever-expanding diversity of member-generated communities. So you may soon get your wish.
