I do not really see an alternative to outright bans on the illegal wildlife trade, despite the best efforts of companies like Rhinoceros Horn LLC (who have now folded). If synthetic substitutes are not seen as a perfect replacement, consumers of trafficked wildlife will continue to demand the real wild product.

I think it is extremely difficult to control the illegal wildlife trade. On a positive note, a Seattle-based startup has taken over the Rhinoceros Horn project to produce synthetic rhino horns. They should launch their product by 2022.
