Two hundred years ago wetlands in the Northeast were aggressively stripped and drained to make way for pasture and crops. Over the past hundred years as the region has become less reliant on an agrarian economy, there has been significant reforestation.
Today, some of the swamplands are mature and thriving, providing increased breeding habitat for Culiseta melanura and wetland roosting sites for migratory songbirds.
