Adam Curtis makes an interesting point here about how "holistic" and ecological ways of structuring society are never apolitical. He argues that many understandings of nature are actually based upon ways in which machines work, and then to apply the idea of the ecosystem onto society is to create a society like a machine. While I must make a note here that I think he glosses over a lot of things (particularly the way in which he describes ecological theories such as the Gaia hypothesis), so watch this with a grain of salt. I think he critical point here is to understand how ideas about ecology or degrowth can be appropriated in catastrophic ways, especially to control society on mass-scale through Big Data.
