I can’t (but unfortunately can) believe that some GOP lawmakers claim the 3/5 compromise was anti-slavery! “By limiting the number of population in the count, they specifically limited the number of representatives that would be available in the slaveholding states, and they did it for the purpose of ending slavery.” - Tennessee state Rep. Justin Lafferty (Republican)

Problem is he doesn’t have anything to say because he knows that he took the money from PG&E. That’s a great question to ask even knowing that you’re not going to get an answer. This is a question that should be continued to be asked to him because he needs to be accountable for who he takes donations from just like every other politician. And we the people of California would like an answer.

There is no way I can vote for someone who defends or applauds an elected official so ignorant about the 3/5 Compromise. How did we get to this place in America?

The folks trying to ban the teaching of critical race theory would really benefit from an intro class on critical race theory. Analysis | GOP state lawmakers: The Three-Fifths Compromise was actually good.

The 3/5th compromise was used to determine the issue of representation between big states and small states. This resulted, along with the NJ compromise, our bi-cameral system. Small non-slave owning states were worried that big slave owning states would use slaves as residents to get more representatives. Thus they agreed on the 3/5th compromise which allowed the entire sum of all slaves in a state to be reduced by 40% in the census. NJ compromise created the Senate. BTW while slave owning states were ready to count slaves as “people” for the census, they argued that slaves were property, as seen in the Dread Scott Supreme Court case.
