Even in a year of horrendous suffering, what is unfolding in Brazil stands out. In the rainforest city of Manaus, home to 2 million people, bodies are reportedly being dropped into mass graves as quickly as they can be dug. Hospitals have run out of oxygen, and people with potentially treatable cases of COVID-19 are dying of asphyxia. This nature and scale of mortality have not been seen since the first months of the pandemic.

"Though many questions remain, one plausible explanation is that people who have already been infected by the virus are getting sick—and not mildly so. That possibility has been long feared throughout the pandemic, yet not previously seen on any significant scale. It comes at a time when variants of SARS-CoV-2 are being identified around the world, including a report in Minnesota of a case of the variant that has become dominant in Brazil."

I read both the early reporting and the final reviewed Lancet piece. There are multiple possible answers. Some of them are statistical or methodological noise. Some of them are deeply concerning.

After going through this, what i found is there might be four possible explanations for big 2nd wave in Manaus after 76% supposedly infected in early 2020: 1. Size of 1st wave overestimated 2. Waning immunity 3. Immune escape of new variants 4. Increased transmissibility of new variants (or combo of these)

Devasting news, specially for those who live in the south hemisphere. Vaccines administration logic is ruled by politics instead of epidemiology. Still, I am shocked how ill prepared the World is against a pandemic which was always highly probable.

Interesting thread, thanks! What do you think about this thread pointing out that flu viruses more easily recombine/shift due to their genomes having 8 segments (compared to just 1 segment in coronaviruses)? Likewise, I was thinking how Vietnam’s success can only be temporary if the virus is allowed to spread and continue mutating elsewhere. The whole world is in this together, yet we clearly aren’t ...

I agree , this vaccine nationalism is stupidity on an epic scale UNLESS they also close all international borders to foreign visitors ( other than ESSENTIAL workers , um these dont incl movie stars, celebs, musicians, sports teams ) and ban their citisens from travelling abroad.
