Wondering if anyone has insights or predictions as to how this will work out. 10 billion dollars is a lot of money but also potentially useless depending on how it’s spent. My guess is it won’t be put toward facilitating any type of degrowth...

The Amazon Employees for Climate Justice's critical response to this announcement perfectly sums up your hesitation to applaud his philanthropy: "...As history has taught us, true visionaries stand up against entrenched systems, often at great cost to themselves. We applaud Jeff Bezos’ philanthropy, but one hand cannot give what the other is taking away. The people of Earth need to know: When is Amazon going to stop helping oil & gas companies ravage Earth with still more oil and gas wells? When is Amazon going to stop funding climate-denying think tanks like the Competitive Enterprise Institute and climate-delaying policy? When will Amazon take responsibility for the lungs of children near its warehouses by moving from diesel to all-electric trucking? Why did Amazon threaten to fire employees who were sounding the alarm about Amazon’s role in the climate crisis and our oil and gas business? What this shows is that employees speaking out works--we need more of that right now. Will Jeff Bezos show us true leadership or will he continue to be complicit in the acceleration of the climate crisis, while supposedly trying to help?” [https://twitter.com/AMZNforClimate/status/1229507159894810624](https://twitter.com/AMZNforClimate/status/1229507159894810624)

There is also the fact that amazon, google, and other tech giants are actually optimizing business for oil and gas, because they have the data analysis capacities to take on these companies as clients. Machine learning has shown to be one of the most effective ways to optimize oil drilling. Google does most of that machine learning for american companies, with amazon in close second or third. It seems like Bezos would do better to shift the entire company to wind power and stop allowing clients whose goals are counter to those of human survival as a species to be taken on by amazon. But hey, at least I can get cheap headphones!

My two issues: 1. Amazon destroying the earth at an unmeasurable amount. 2. Not signing the Giving Pledge This 7% of his net worth seems like a PR move.
