In recent years there has been a great deal of speculation about the possible harmful effects of digital technology, particularly smartphones, on mental health, the ability to concentrate, and sleep patterns. Is there any sound evidence to support these concerns? AO: In relation to how much societal debate and coverage these questions get, there is very little evidence for these concerns, and even less high-quality, robust and transparent evidence. I think that lack of high-quality evidence makes the question really difficult to answer... Amy Orben is a research fellow at Emmanuel College and the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit at the University of Cambridge. She works in the field of experimental psychology and her speciality is analysing large-scale datasets to determine how social media and the use of digital technology affect the wellbeing of teenagers

Orben makes some good points about data accessibility and needing more info re: manipulation but the part where she talks about not comparing our experience/parenting to the "elite" really gave me pause. It's as though she's advocating for freedom of thought to be determined according to class...

”Jean Twenge and I have had a lot of disagreement on this.” FWIW I am convinced that Twenge is on to something. We know blue light disrupts sleep, we know that the constant availability changes relationships, we know (with some confidence) that online interactions pull for more sadism and narcissism, etc. Screen time for young people is probably a net bad thing, and possibly a very bad thing. In my current opinion (very familiar w/ the literature), screen time + social media is probably net bad for young brains, mental health, relationships, and civic engagement.
