A succinct argument for why algorithmic sorting of information is the original sin of Facebook and other social media apps. I would add to this the populist mechanism of one-person(click/bot)-one-vote that create mob dynamics and discourage nuance. There is an interesting comment at the bottoms of the article saying “this is just human nature and there is no solution”. It’s is also human nature to bludgeon one another to death and we have come up with a variety of solutions to prevent that, at least for the most part. Solutions are out there they just happen to not make as much money as engagement algorithms.

This was a great short read. Zuck & Facebook at large haven’t done anything to atone for their original sin; actively incentivizing polarization amongst common people. Check out the article I shared on some of the basics of Machine Learning; goes over how some of the essentials on how it’s a different programming paradigm & some of the base key concepts. I think it’s important for people (especially people conscious of these sorts of things) to at least be able to take a guess on what they can do to at least misinform learning nets. What small token actions they can make to at least make learning nets stupider in spite of GANs & whatnot.
