I don’t see what point this author is trying to make. Yeah. The world is f***ing terrifying. Yeah kids are anxious. Yeah we know that the future we were promised no longer exists. Like, no sh*t we’re anxious 🙄

im not anxious... i think as humans we will benefit psychologically and socially from having to deal with the effects of our own escalating system. the apocalypse is literally only a narrative that is easily attached to the basic anxiety of being human. adults should be more responsible than to project their own doomsday pornographic narcissisms onto children to justify their own meaning-void crusades

I think this is a fair critique because just for many reasons inducing children with fear is wrong, and I would imagine it doesn’t necessarily support a healthy conversation about the topic. We need a positive solution oriented discussion and movement, yes with critiques of our current system. Inducing fear makes us tackle the problem from a place of scarcity and fear and we might not see the nuances we need

"What is really increasing is the determination by experts and activists to construct this new mental disease of ‘eco-anxiety’. Indeed eco-anxiety sounds suspiciously like any other form of anxiety."

Good discussion of the use of children to raise stakes. Super cynical by the nonprofit industrial complex, if I may use that term lol, to place children on the front line as shock value to raise funds. Feeling lately that Greta Thurnberg represents this well, especially when we see those endlessly weird scenes of her scolding adults and then applauded by these same adults, all while climate stats become even more extreme and inhospitable.
