"Where previous decades had unique images and sounds, today’s popular cinema and soundtrack are stuck on repeat. Trapped in infinite additions to the Star Wars universe, these films don’t feel so much like a generational marker as they do an inescapable loop designed to dislodge notions of historical thinking. Ubiquitous vaporwave music, memes and other 1980s throwbacks, let us know that culture has been locked in for a good while now. In the mid-aughts, time seemed to flow with a 25-year, or generational, window of nostalgia. But to repeat a 15-year-old pop-culture sensation like World of Warcraft gives us a much closer measurement. As each year becomes worse than the last, the window of nostalgia closes further.
