Luteolin is a is a common flavonoid that exists in many plants including fruits, vegetables, and medicinal herbs. For centuries, plants rich in luteolin have been used in Chinese traditional medicine for treating diseases like hypertension, inflammatory disorders, and cancer. Though luteolin has a long history of use in eastern culture, modern medicine has just started to investigate the benefits and potential applications it may have for neurinflammatory disorders like autism. In this article, I will detail the reported benefits of using luteolin supplements. In addition, I will provide links to studies which support its potential application in autism. After, I will answer several commonly asked questions about using luteolin for autism. This will give you all the information you need to determine if it's right for your child or not. Refer below for details: Benefits of Luteolin -------------------- - Inhibits oxidative stress, inflammation, mast cell degranulation, cytokine release in brain - Stopped release of inflammatory mediators which was induced by exposure to thimerosol - Prevents microglial activation and proliferation and auto-immune T cell activation - Protective against methylmercury-induced mitochondrial damage, mimics BDNF in brain - More potent than best known medication in ability to inhibit human mast cell TNF release Luteolin/Autism Studies ----------------------- - Serum IL-6 and TNF levels decreased significantly, autistic behaviors improved significantly - GI and allergy symptoms improved in 75 percent of children, eye contact/attention in 50 percent, etc. [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22697063](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22697063) - Significant improvement in adaptive functioning, daily living, social interaction, etc. [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23688534](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23688534) -Luteolin supplementation shown to reverse autism symptoms when used on mice, shows great promise. Summary- Luteolin has Potential in ASD -------------------------------------- As you can see, luteolin has significant potential in autism. In addition, it may be helpful with other diseases involving neurological inflammation. Unlike other mast cell modulators, it targets several key inflammatory mediators in the brain. Though it is by no means the cure, it has produced nearly miraculous results in the limited studies performed. In short, if you know someone who is battling autism, you may want to recommend luteolin! It is very inexpensive, and the science shows great promise. Though it may not be equally effective for everyone, the research suggests it could be helpful in at least a subgroup of ASD patients. If you have any questions about approaching autism naturally, get in touch. Thanks for reading, and happy healing everyone!
