“the "fakeness" of deepfakes is not necessarily supposed to trick people; viewers know it's fake and enjoy seeing a hidden "truth" revealed symbolically
the more overtly fake it is, the more cruel it is and the more violently it is rupturing the "false" surface reality
basically think people circulate deepfakes because they are cruel and violent, not because they are "realistic" and might trick people or change people's minds
as deepfakes circulate, they communicate the possibility that power dictates what is "true"; circulating the deepfake is attempt to collaborate with that power (or earn protection from it)”
