"EVE Online is a massively multiplayer online game where players can mine planets, fight other players in all-out war, and fly through wormholes to reach new destinations. Now it’s helping scientists learn more about COVID-19."

[@tomgalle](/user/profile/tomgalle) [@KulpaBE](/user/profile/KulpaBE) I'm an immunologist and work exclusively in flow cytometry. This is a neat fluff piece, but I really don't buy the usefulness of this application, at least as the title implies. I know Mechanical Turks and AI training are a thing (outside of my wheelhouse), but much of modern flow is done with either manual gating analysis by researchers or uses established algorithms such as FlowSOM, tsne clustering, etc. The real point of interest here is using the game's playerbase for large-scale AI training on datasets; that "330 years of research on COVID-19" bit is pretty bad clickbait.
