Oil and gas companies are a political structure: they possess private, authoritarian dominion over the pace and volume of oil and gas production, and thus of important determinants of global emissions. These emissions and their consequences do not respect any sort of public/private distinction, nor borders, nor the rights to clean air or clean water. For decades, private oil companies have intentionally and recklessly obscured their role in the destruction of countless local environments as well as their role in the global climate crisis.

Companies like Shell make sure that inequality does not disappear in Nigeria (And Africa as a whole), their government stays corrupt, and their environment is being destroyed.

The impact and effect of the massive environmental degradation in the Niger delta region will be felt for years to come. Nigerian government and appropriate international agencies should lend a helping hand in providing succor and aid to this people. They have suffered enough for a resource they are not enjoying.

Yeah, I really do not understood why we give our resources away to corporations? I may not like the mass majority of their practices but the Middle East has it going on. They get the profits from their oil from their land which they (we) pay to protect. Shell and all these other companies just come in destroy the environment and then leave us with the bill. West Virginia has the most resources in the United States hands down they provide the majority of coal and wood to the United States and yet they're the poorest in the nation. Fuck corporations. Capitalism for making bicycles, socialism is for resources/infrastructure. Democratic socialism is the way. Hopefully future generations will live under such a gov.
