There seem to be some conflicting opinions on the extent to which NFTs can damage the environment. NFTs are still in their infancy and currently represent a small percentage of Ethereum transactions. I wonder how many people will choose not to participate because of the potential for environmental harm.

My stance on NFT's is that, yes, they are terrible for the environment and predatory to emerging artists, but also that they are just glorified versions of those Buy A Star kiosks that were in every mall in the 90's and therefore incredibly dorky.

The argument ignores how people have been promising greener Bitcoin and proof-of-work for years and solutions never actually arrive. This is a new emissions source that provides no social benefit and just fuels financial speculation. It’s okay to say it shouldn’t exist.

the process used to mint them requires warehouses of computers to process advance algorithms to decode/encode them with ever transaction. its not so much the gif itself but the process of trading the gif.

Personally, I feel this is an irresponsible way to report on the climate footprint of NFTs. It’s basically some people say it’s a problem, but others don’t and are working on solutions, and it can ultimately be solved through tech and individual action.

Have you considered the energy consumption that minting one NFT on Ethereum takes? Better switch to environmental friendly (and more modern) solutions like Tezos [#cleanNFT](/ecology/new/cleanNFT) . Environmental damage trough blockchains is real.
