Nearly 3 billion animals were killed or displaced by Australia’s devastating bushfire season of 2019 and 2020, according to scientists who have revealed for the first time the scale of the impact on the country’s native wildlife.

Conservationists have linked Australia’s limited monitoring of its wildlife to a funding for environment programmes being cut by more than a third since the conservative Coalition government was elected in 2013.

Wildfires in Australia in 2019 and 2020 killed and injured 3 billion animals. This assessment is provided in a study conducted by the universities of Sydney, New South Wales, Newcastle, Charles Sturt and the conservation group BirdLife Australia, commissioned by the world wildlife Fund.
