Recuperation is inevitable unless a movement succeeds because movements that become popular before they succeed fail and all movements eventually see their rise and perhaps fall.

The blurred lines between culture and politics are a double-edged sword. On one hand, a culture of anti-capitalism creates unity, a sense of community, and loyalty on the other hand it leaves certain intricacies prone to error.

Recuperation is above all profitable because it’s a way to capitalize off of the popularity of mass movements. A “mass” or “populist” movement has little chance of success. As soon as a movement becomes popular it gets recuperated because the mass appeal of a movement – not its politics directly – is the primary determination of its value to capitalists.

I feel we can’t understand why we fail unless we understand why recuperation occurs. Recuperation is not caused by a mystical force beyond logic, it’s not necessarily always done to quell radical movements. The fact that recuperation is merely the consequence of the unintelligent, undiscriminating expansion of commodification forces us to change our idea of success. A movement’s success cannot be measured or achieved via a massive public appearance and support

propaganda isn’t the only intended effect. It’s unrealistic to expect a successful movement to present itself as unified but is instead presented by a variety of movements indirectly inspired by it. This should not be confused for decentralization or spontaneity, the original movement may be organized.
