"Some people have argued that NFT marketplaces are web3 for web3. My response to that is that they are a key part of empowering artists to monetize their art through blockchain technology and provide necessary off-ramps for collectors. In order to accomplish that a marketplace has to be able to provide an interface for the creation of an NFT and a way for the artist to sell their newly minted NFT immediately. I am purposefully leaving out curated marketplaces, think ArtBlocks or DraftKings, because they’re not open for anyone to use. I put them under the “Art” category because that has been their target market and the industry they have disrupted most. Yes, I can pick up a Zen Academy membership or some other non-art-related NFT on them but they aren’t built with memberships in mind."
