>"She wanted to fix law enforcement, so she joined the police academy."
>"She wanted to fix law enforcement, so she joined the police academy."
As always, incredibly insightful essay. When right-wing nut bags say "If you hate the police so much why don't you join and change them from the inside" ZERO of your thoughts should be "Oooh this is the pitch for a best-selling memoir." There is, as they say, a lot of psychology happening in this woman's head.

[@Heide](/user/profile/Heide) When Brooks first tells her mother about her plans to become a cop Ehrenreich invokes Nietzsche’s line about how those who gaze long enough into the abyss will find the abyss gazing back into them. But what will Americans see when they gaze into this book? What's also great about this is that Pat does not lean on polemic or impose interpretation; he lets the text speak for itself: unfortunately, a bypassed rhetorical approach that is actually extremely effective!

A professor - if their subject contains any rigour at all - should be able to present evidence to support a claim as outlandish as "I don't trust them. My life's in more danger in their presence." To hold such an opinion privately is one thing. To be willing to go on the record in class with that opinion - well, such a professor ought to be able to calmly and confidently recite the studies that form the basis of this opinion. If not, then this professor is a charlatan posing as an academic.

[@moya](/user/profile/moya) -mclean In the proper context, a professor should have the acumen to conduct an intelligent exchange. However, this was a speech course not the evironment in which to express her dislike/distrust of the subject of the student's presentation. Her disruption had absolutely nothing to do with "skills" she agreed to teach. You will find that this has seeped into every corner of higher education and is now attempting to infiltrate secondary and elementary levels. This is not acceptable on any level. I do not wish unfair harm on anyone, but she took the fairness out of the equation. Every assholle who creates victims should focus on her and anyone who thinks like this! How dare they question the fair system!
