I’m puzzling over your article as a much older black woman because your words characterize black criticism from other black folks as yielding to white criticism. Hmmm. I am certain that I have been and I am still guilty of said behavior. Being a woman born in the late 1940’s, an only child, the product of an educated parentage as well as previous generations of well educated black folks. My family and in turn I was embued with specific expectations; get and education, their something that no one can take away from you. Of course they, you know, the ones that have always held the title or being extremely well educated or at least possessing that invaluable white hue, can deny the validity of education acquired, especially an education acquired at a great expense to person and being. I attended all white schools and lived in all white neighborhoods. My point? Since the 1980’s, black culture, and this is a very broad statement, moved away from acquiring education because of dreams of “making it” could be fulfilled by sports or Rap. I watched black administrators at various high school demean the value of an education to largely black student populations and absolutely refused to shed light on the unseen paths that their students would have to traverse to even get their foot in the proverbial door. So, yeah, as a black teacher, I routinely outlined what the path looked like and steps that had to be taken iin an attempt to succeed in piercing that white veil that has kept far too many out the game for far too long. So, can young black athletes be better? Is there more to life than trying to secure one’s economic future with endorsements rather than concentrating on the developed skill that landed them on the field in the first place? Again, I am old and I have watched many careers in all fields over the years crash and burn. We have all lost and I mean folks of all colors, have lost humility and replaced it with a core of everyday mean. We need people to tell us when we are acting out of pocket, and as you well know there are legions of over entitled folks doing that every day. Pulling someone’s coats tails is not about side-stepping the man, it’s about the preservation of life!
